With Bestselling Author, Journalist, and TV Producer Janice Kaplan

Did you know that 90% of Americans surveyed believe geniuses are almost always men? Who comes to mind when YOU think of the word “genius”? Why aren’t women on that list? Societal biases and the overwhelming messages on social media seem to suggest that women and young girls will be valued more for their physical appearance and how they present themselves than their intelligence or scholastic accomplishments. Are we subconsciously sabotaging young women by sending the wrong message? My guest today is New York Times bestselling author, television producer and journalist, Janice Kaplan, whom I originally interviewed in January of 2020. She’s the former editor-in-chief of Parade magazines where she was responsible for high-profile interviews such as President Barack Obama, Matt Damon, and Barbara Streisand. She’s written or co-written over a dozen books including The Gratitude Diaries, I’ll See You Again, and her latest book The Genius of Women. The book explores how women have been encouraged to hide their achievements over the years. This unconscious bias exists in science, the arts, and more. In this episode, we discuss how we can do a better job of bringing out the best in young girls today.
